Clarence McKerrow, playing in place of the injured Billy Barlow, became the first "ringer" in Stanley Cup history and scored once for the AAA in a winning effort.

Montreal Victorias

Dark, 1895

By the end of the 1895 AHAC season, Montreal Victorias had secured the title with a record of 6-2.  However, the trustees of the Stanley Cup had already accepted a challenge for the trophy from Queen’s University against the Montreal Hockey Club.

In one of the more bizarre Stanley Cup challenges, Montreal AAA defeated Queen’s University 5-1, and the Montreal Victorias were deemed the Stanley Cup Champions.

We can only speculate that if Queen’s won, they would have been deemed the Stanley Cup Champions and the Victorias would have likely had to challenge them to get it back.
